Check out or search for Andy Goldsworthy when you get the chance. He does some really innovative work. He’ll make pieces in nature and he immediately lets nature degrade what he makes. In other words, he doesn’t try to preserve his work—only by photograph.

So, I play video games once in while. Just finished “Batman: Arkham Asylum” and it was wonderful. I can easily see why it was awarded “game of the year.” It was innovative, sleek, and story driven. Overall, it was very well made and serves its comic book origins a nice hot plate of steak and mashed potatoes. Respect.

This video is a little different than what I usually post, but it’s pretty stunning nonetheless. You can really see why we call celebrities “fake” sometimes. They aren’t necessarily fake (that’s a little harsh), it’s just the photos of them are heavily modified. Pretty crazy stuff. I hope no one takes offense to the the PG-13 images. So, here is my project. I guess I’ll call it “Thorn Throne.” A chair is usually something that is comfortable to sit down in, but the imagery says otherwise. I took photos of thistles, teasle (cone-looking weed), rose bushes, and pine cones. The colors are supposed to be warm and intense which is opposite of the relaxation that cooler colors can bring. So, despite being a chair, you don’t want to sit down on this thing (it’s not that large either). I used cardboard and paper mache. Height= 12” Width= 8” at widest point. P.S. I apologize for the back of the chair, it has a slight curvature. So, sticking photos to it uniformly is impossible.

Speed Painting w/layers:

Here is more speed painting for your eyes only. This artist has a different approach from what I’ve seen lately. He started out with his own sketch, scanned the image, then heavily used layers to add values. His approach seems more methodical and less “free hand,” if you will. Uses the magnetic lasso tool and creates new layers from his selections which actually seems more manageable than just free handing everything. Pretty cool stuff if you ask me.

My creative mojo is evading me right now. Maybe I should model an object and have it appear to be dangerous. For example, my innocent little import of a car actually has missiles and smoke bombs tucked behind the bumper. Eff! I don’t wanna model my car.

Here is a link for a little sample of speed painting with Photoshop. There are some other artists doing the same thing with much more detail and subject matter, but this is just a warm-up. I’ll post another one soon. By the way, I think it’s called “speed painting” because its all in fast forward. Otherwise, the clip would be hours long and boring. But yeah, some good color and he messes with the opacity a fair amount too. And I’m sure some of you peeps, if not all, have seen speed painting before.

Got a little Daft Punk going on right now in the ears while trying to blog. Bloggy, blog, blog, I almost love to blog.

I just recently saw Kung Fu Panda 2 at the CUB and it was mind blowing (kaboom). I thoroughly enjoyed the first installment. It was clever, kid friendly (yes, I am that way sometimes), and funny. The sequel did not do as well, critically, according to RottenTomatoes.com, but I really can’t see why. It was more dynamic, character driven, and it seemed to have better choreographed action segments. Holy mother of pearl! It was a very entertaining and inspiring movie. Also, another film that didn’t do well critically was Tron: Legacy by Disney. “Art, art, art.” is all I can say. The visuals in that film were pretty spectacular even though the dialogue wasn’t always up to par. Hey, Avatar had the same problem, but once you pass 15 billion worldwide in the box office it doesn’t freaking matter. Anyway, stylistically and visually Tron did not disappoint. Also, the movie score by Daft Punk and some British orchestra was quite legitimate in terms of quality and theme. Yes, one scene rivaled the intensity of Ripley Scott’s Gladiator in the “arena” scene of Tron. So, if you haven’t seen any or all of these films mentioned, I suggest you do. If you’re an fine art or DTC major, heck, if you’re in this class you should invest a lonely night in these films. Thanks kids. Bye.

One of my channels of inspiration as a FA major is video game design. Various artists (environment, character, 3D, and directors) are hired to develop modern products. One of their software tools is Adobe’s Photoshop. They can pump out some very creative things when they use the program to draw. Seeing concept artists and environment artists use a computer program as a medium is just cool. Yeah? Yeah. So here is an image from their site. They do a good job in communicating their process. So here is an example from one of their latest installments. Oh, yes. This is a developing company called Bungie and they developed a little game franchise called “Halo.” They are located in Bellvue.
